We are looking for a specialist Welfare and Benefits adviser to join our small, dynamic and welcoming team at Thetford Citizens Advice.
Role profile
We’re looking for an experienced adviser who would like to use their expertise to support the local community. Working as part of our Thetford Team and a jobshare in this role, you will provide welfare and benefits advice, income maximization and support with debt and general advice. This includes ongoing casework that is not time limited, tailored to include the individual’s needs, offering a joined-up approach with wrap around support to those who are experiencing crisis and hardship. This role will focus on benefit appeals, complex benefits advice and supported applications.
- Located across Thetford locations. You will spend time at the following locations as well as The Abbey Centre office/Diss office and occasional other locations.

You will be completing the following:
- Casework and advice to clients
- Benefit Advice
- Benefit Appeals
- Benefit Checks
- Hardship and debt support
- Budgeting
- Income maximisation
- Signposting and referrals
- Compile and Report relevant required data demonstrating the impact of the advice and support given
- You will attend Development and Well-being meetings and participate in activities within the organisation.
Professional Development
- Keep up to date with legislation, case law, policies and procedures relating to specified area and undertaking appropriate training.
- Attend relevant internal and external meetings as agreed with the line manager.
- Complete Debt Adviser Learning training
Person Specification
Essential
- Previous advice and support work
- Knowledge of welfare benefits system
- Experience of casework and benefit appeals
- Financial capability, income maximisation experience
- Excellent listening and communication skills with particular emphasis on negotiating, representing and preparing reviews, reports and correspondence
- Fully understand the issues involved in interviewing clients and demonstrate an understanding of social trends and their implications for clients and the service
- Knowledge of a range of advice issues and an ability to identify safeguarding concerns and how to make onward referrals to the appropriate authority and organisations
- You will have experience of working effectively & sensitively with clients and a knowledge of the Thetford area
- Utilising IT in the provision of advice and the preparation of reports and submissions.
- Understanding of and commitment to the aims and principles of the organisations service and its equality and diversity policies
Desirable
- Understanding of Universal Credit Migration
- Debt advice
