Burston pupils share the spirit of harvest festival

Kind-hearted pupils at Burston Primary School have been putting the spirit of harvest festival into action by collecting a large donation of food for community grocery store, The Shelf.

The generous haul was presented to representatives from The Shelf during a special harvest festival assembly at the school on on 5th October, led by Pastor Sam of Burston Chapel.

The Shelf is run by Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford & District and is based at our offices in Market Place, Diss.

The community grocery store is open to anyone living in Norfolk and Suffolk, offering a range of groceries and household essentials at discounted prices. It aims to help people who may be feeling the pressure of the rising cost of living, while also helping to reduce food waste.

The Shelf regularly receives donations from local food businesses and growers, including unsold produce and seasonal windfalls which might otherwise be thrown away.

The generous contribution from the pupils at Burston Primary School will help keep The Shelf well stocked over the coming weeks and provide much-needed support to people in the local community.

Helen Youngman, Food Programme Officer at Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford & District, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the children, their families and everyone at Burston Primary School for this wonderfully generous donation. It is heartening to see young people thinking about others in their community and putting the spirit of harvest festival into action.

“Every item donated will help us to support people across Norfolk and Suffolk, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part. It is wonderful to see the children learning that sharing and kindness can make such a positive difference to others.”

The Shelf is open every Monday and Thursday, 9.30am – 11.30am, and Friday, 12.30pm – 2.30pm. Anyone living in Norfolk and Suffolk can become a member of The Shelf for a one-off fee of £3.50. To sign-up, visit The Shelf during the store’s opening hours with identification that shows your address.
