Big C

Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford & District first started working with people with cancer in hospitals several years ago with a contract from Citizens Advice but when this ended the BigC cancer charity invited bids to continue that work with them. After discussion with our neighbouring bureaux it was agreed that because of our proven experience in this field, we would bid for this contract and we were successful. That was in early 2011, so we are now in our fifth year of this successful partnership.

We are working at:

  • The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital in Norwich (2 days p.w.)
  • The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kings Lynn (2 days p.w.)
  • The James Paget Hospital in Great Yarmouth in partnership with North East Suffolk CAB (1 day p.w.)
  • Cromer Hospital in Cromer (1 afternoon p.w.)

This work requires a very special adviser who is not only very competent in welfare benefits but who has empathy with the hospital patients, some of whom have life limiting conditions or are terminally ill. Our dedicated specialist staff advise patients in the centre, visit the wards and also provide telephone appointments.

All the advisers working under this contract experience great job satisfaction because they know they can make a real difference to both the patient and their families, although at times it can also be distressing work.
